The leaves exhibit small, circular or irregular, dark brown or black greasy spots. As the spots enlarge in size, the centre becomes lighter surrounded by a dark band of tissue. On the fruits, round, raised water soaked spots with a pale yellow border are produced.

The roots and lower part of the stem have a browning of the water-conducting portion (i.e. vascular system) of the plant. Diseased roots or stems that are cut and placed in a small container of water will show a steady, yellowish or gray bacterial ooze coming from the cut end.
